We've had a great time at the Murray! We have met 3 new friends there names are Archie, Harvey and Claudia. They are heading the same way as us (to western Australia) but they have been on the road for 5 months. We went tubing and did some swimming we played some fun games, we went fishing and caught some huge fish... but they were Carp :( carp are actually the most common fish in the Murray River.
New years night was real fun. Harvey and I watched some Top Gear that I got for Christmas and played with some awesome glow sticks. You could connect some to make a flower and there were scented bracelets and some that looked like lanterns. I went to bed at around 0100 on new years day. This was our last day. We went jet on a jet ski that was new and it could go 70 miles per hour with no problem. There were three of us on - the driver, Archie in the middle and me on the very back.
We hit a huge wake from a boat we went super high and I flew off. We then went for one last tube which was the best yet! The rest of the day we just hung out. The next day we said our goodbyes and left - 370km to Gol Gol, NSW
6 February 2014
I have been having an awesome time.
My favourite place has definitely been Fowlers Bay (Population 20) so far. We caught 22 fish (King George/sand Whiting) surf fishing. We met some great friends. Their names are Soren, Jasmine and Sienne and their mum and dad are Charmaine and Damien. They are from Queensland and have been travelling around the country for about year now. I also met some aboriginal kids from Yalata and they were doing back flips off the jetty. I fished with them and they were good at fishing. They were really talented. They were having a great time playing their guitar and I took photos of them. They were funny and one of the guys made a drum set out of two pencils and a chip packet. The guy playing the guitar had only four strings. They said they ate wombat and they said it was yummy. They had an awesome really big kangaroo dog and it had a big cut on its ear. They said this slice down his ear was from a kangaroo. The man said "See this here, kangaroo did this, kangaroo tried to kill him, he turned around and kill it!" They came back the next day and I got some photos with them.
From Fowlers Bay we crossed the Nullabor. It was fun. We stopped at a road house called Cocklebiddy (population 8). We stopped in Merridin where the temperature reached 47 degrees! It was stinking hot!
Then we arrived in Dunsborough, which was our destination because Llewanna and Mayarn are there. They are our friends that we came to see. The best beach so far has definelty been Yallingup beach! This beach is surrounded by a reef so no sharks can get in and the surf wasn't extremely strong because the reef protected it. So is was great for snorkelling. I saw a ton of fish and they were Bream, whiting, and other fish that I'm not sure of the names. On the last day at Dunsborough we went to a fun park called Xscape to the Cape. Every minute a bucket tipped water on everyone playing on the waterslides. The best water slide was the red one because it was the biggest! Then we did the maze which we didn't finish because it was too hot and the floor was concrete. Then we did the trampolines. They were really fun because they were really bouncy! The time limit to jump on them was about 10 minutes. Then we did mini-golf. Which was really fun. It was really hard too. Then we went on a big tower that you had to climb. It is sort of hard to explain the tower but it was really tall and you had to climb up through nets. The fabric was like the car seat belt fabric but it was a lot stretchier. it was in a diamond pattern and you had to push them to the side so you could make way to get through. The tower was the funnest!
We spent a week in Augusta. It was really fun. We met some friends whose names are Kirra, Tom, Paddy and their mum and dad's names are Michael and Aloha. They are from Perth. They come to Augusta each year. Kirra showed us how to let sting rays suck our feet and I've been patting them. We rented a tinny and I caught two bream but they were too small to keep. We explored the Blackwood River in our boat and we saw lots of birds we stopped on a sand bar and wrote our names as big as we could in the sand. Then we saw some dolphins swimming. They were really cool, we saw them about four times. I got the chance to kayak and really enjoyed it.
Our next stop was Pemberton! Our campsite was in awesome, it was in the bush and we were allowed to have fires. We widdled some sticks to roast marshmallows. It was all fun and games until someone got poked in the eye with a burnt stick...and that was me! But i'm ok! At our campsite I fed some birds with birdseed. I had at least 8 parrots on me at one point. My family keeps calling me the birdman! In Pemberton we went to the Gloucester Tree and climbed it. It is 53m high and there are big iron spikes stuck int he tree to climb up like a ladder. They used to use it for a fire look out. The next day we went with Graeme from Pemberton Discovery Centre in our car (a Pajero) four wheel driving. We went to the beach in our cars and over the biggest landlocked sand dunes in the southern hemisphere and through an ancient Karri tree forest. Driving through the bush we saw some wild emus! I learnt that George is a very deep sleeper because he slept through the biggest bumps! Graeme pointed out the three different kinds of trees in the forest, Karri, Marri and Jarra. He also showed us the soap bush which if you put it in the water it drains the oxygen so it makes kangaroos drowsy so they are easier to catch and the fish float to the top so you can pick them up.
Now we are in Denmark. We found this really cool shop that has recycled bike parts made into bike spoke bracelets, bike tyre belts, earrings made out of the inner tubes and key rings made out of the bike chains. We went swimming in Wilsons Inlet where you can see all the way to the bottom.
After Denmark, we went to Albany. Mum and I went on a bike ride with the two bikes that we rented. I almost hit a lizard that was crossing the path. The lizard didn't move. The whole point we were going on the bike ride was to go meet dad and Bella and George in town at the four wheel drive store because the car was getting roo bars fitted. Then we went into town to go meet them but mum got us lost and we ended up going for a 15km bike ride that should have been 5km. After the very hot and tiring bike ride we finally found Dad and Bella and George at a cafe and we had some milkshakes and something to eat. After that we went to an African store. The African store was cool, it had awesome bracelets and stuff. After we had a look in there we had to go to the taxi service so mum George and Bella could get a taxi back and Dad and I could ride our bikes back. It was a lot shorter then when mum took me.
The next day in the morning, we went to a whaling station. They had really cool souvenirs and it was really gruesome learning how they cut the blubber off the whales by hand. Then we got to walk into an old whaling ship. The rooms were quite small and the beds were smaller then the bed in our caravan. The ladders were really steep trying to get up and down the ship. We got some photos of me steering with the emergency steering wheel. Then we had our picnic lunch, it was yummy and we saw two lizards under the coke machine staring at us. After that we went for around a 900 meter walk to some blow holes. Blow holes are big holes in rocks and when the waves come they hit the rock and go under it and up through the hole in the blow hole and blows up through the top and makes a big noise!
We then drove to Esperance. In this town, when we came in we got a big shock because of all the construction in the town. We had a bit of trouble finding the caravan park. Once we came in Bella and I went to the park and some people offered if we wanted to play ball tiggy with them and we said yes. Those people became friends. We went out for dinner for mum's birthday. We ordered a surprise cake for mum and it said happy 40th birthday because mum is getting old! Then we drove on the beach for 22 km. It was fun and really cool. Driving on the beach is really fun and you can't take your eyes on the view. We got airborne in one spot because we went over a big lump in the ground that you could not see in front of you. The water was a turquoise sort of colour. We had to watch the tide to stay away from the water. Then we saw the Cape Le Grand bush camp. It was really cool and we decided to stay there. We met some friends there and their dad taught us how to surf. He was really nice and was a really good help teaching us. It is really fun to surf and it is extremely hard to try to stand up. My back was really sore the next day because getting up uses a lot of your back muscles.
Last night before the 90 mile stretch we stayed at a really cool camping spot called Fraser Range Station for one night. It used to be a huge sheep station that is 440,000 acres but there is no sheep left on it because the wild dogs got them. So they shut down five years ago. We climbed a big hill and a lot of people had made big rock towers that were really cool. We all put one rock on them even George. From the hill we could see a huge valley and the station that we were staying in. When you drove in there was really really really really cool old car that was broken down and rusty. We saw a lot of wild emus and when we were leaving this morning we got a send off by 5 kangaroos . They were jumping about 30km/hour along side of us and then they jumped in front of our car but we didn't hit them!
We are now half way across the Nullarbor and we have passed 90 mile straight which is the longest road with no turns in Australia! We pulled up and we are in Eucla for the night and there is a big cliff looking down onto the beach. George is travelling extremely well sleeping for long times and is starting to be able to stand up with no one holding him. Tomorrow we will continue crossing the Nullarbor and we will cross the boarder into South Australia.
After a nice easy drive we crossed the boarder into South Australia where they checked for any fruit and vegetables and they took our last three jalapeƱos. Then we went through a couple turns into a place called Cactus Beach. Cactus Beach was an extremely cool surf beach. I went fishing and caught three fish (a Leatherjacket, herring and something that looked like an Australian salmon). I didn't know you could eat Leatherjacket cause mine was huge! Cactus Beach was one of the best places it was like Fowlers Bay. It was really good because we had so much space around us. There were not many people there, it wasn't crowded like some other places have been. We met some nice people and they were all surfers. I was down at the camp fire with the surfers and I had no idea what they were saying because it was all "on shore" "off shore" stuff. All words that I have never heard in my life. They really confused me. I think it was about which way the wind was blowing and how the swell was going to be but they said it in technical words. They told me about the website Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) and it was really cool cause it said where the wind was blowing and I could actually understand it.
We then went to Ceduna for the night. We stopped here to stock up on food and have a shower. I bought 4 squid lures and I gave one away. From Ceduna we travelled to Port Pirie and then to Murray Bridge. We didn't do much but just stop at a few places to get home. We stopped at Horsham to visit friends and tell them about our trip.
Now we are home! The trip was really fun!
